Barefeet Theater

02 Feb 2018

Barefeet Theater is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that uses play, creativity, and empowerment to give vulnerable children in Zambia a chance at a better life. Barefeet was founded by former street children as a response to the plight of young people living on Zambia streets. Through the power of performance, educational workshops, and more, we develop vulnerable youth into physically healthy, cognitively, and socially competent young people.

Established in 2006, Barefeet is about people. It's about children. It's about art. Barefeet is about change, about fun, about achieving transformation through mischief, hard work, but always laughter and a smile. It is about information and education. It is  about hope, aspiration and reaching for more. Barefeet is about innovation and collaboration. It is  about the staff, volunteers and supporters who have been part of our birth, growth and evolution. It is about walking together to create a movement that can help shift the world one step at a time.

Barefeet has 'toes'—their programme areas—which help inspire the most vulnerable youth to make positive life choices and move to a safe and healthy environment. To achieve this, Barefeet uses a multi-dimensional approach. Through theatre, performance, psychosocial support, creativity, and self-expression Barefeet works to address the needs of the children Barefee works with.

Barefeet delivers life-saving information and inspiration to the kids who need it most through outreach programs with children living on the streets, interactive theater workshops with 2,000 children in 40 communities in Zambia, and on the national stage at their annual Barefeet Youth Arts Festival. Additionally, Barefeet children advocate for change for their fellow youth in the Barefeet Children Council, comprised of elected representatives from partner children centers. Their final is the Barefeet performance company, which generates income to support their outreach programs and workshops.

Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step of your life. Tip toe if you must, just take the step
